Thursday, October 10, 2013 Lecture # 4 – Research Ethics SOCI 2030 – Research Methods Fred Diamond - There needs to be a sense of research ethics. Otherwise, there would be no “line”. - Companies my ask you to do research that may violate certain standards because they want concrete results. Therein lies the moral conundrum. - Two views: o Causing blatant harm to another living thing is wrong on all accounts. o Causing blatant harm to another living things is acceptable only when it’s serving the greater good. - Being is position of guilty knowledge. Do you report found criminal knowledge that you acquired through your research. Ethics in Social Research: - Scientific misconduct - Research fraud - Unethical but legal - Ethics and research participants (Harm)
