FREUD AND THE EGO
EGO
⁃ego is part of the other
⁃ego based on reality principle
⁃the reality principle is about rules- ego concerned about rules/socila
⁃the ego has to work out issues
⁃ITS so dramatic situation, your ego puts it in the unconscious
⁃“ID” is open ended
SUPER EGO (super ego part of ego, but its the moral, part, ethics, rules, rules ex.
murder rules, incest rules)
⁃very complicated part of ego
⁃the oedipal struggle at a unconscious level
⁃freud argues theres a sexual part between child and parent, even though its at
uncounsioness level, the ego is developed
⁃freud focus on the boy
⁃at an uncouncious level the boy develops
⁃the objectification starts with woman at a young age
⁃electric complex: the idea both male and female, start off with other, the girl
wants to identify with mother, the father rejects the girl because they don’t have the
same genital
⁃you have to go back to mother
⁃subordination comes at an early age
⁃key point: successful renunciation, girl will take on mother super ego, morals,
values, ethics
⁃super ego is subdivided into two parts (first part: concience, inhibit “ID” second
part: ego ideal: whats perfection, whats the ideal person?, behaving morally, )
⁃ex. Oprah, prophets, mother theresa

⁃care of self; woman start off caring for themselves
⁃participation with other; you start seeing things from other ppl point of view. ex.
mother, father, sibling
⁃care of other; you become nurturing, you become someone who considers the
other, will sacrifice, are you going to sacrifice for others? This is a female social
morality, socially contructed she says
⁃gestures and reactions as a “looking glass”, looking mirror society, it could be
positive or negative, at times it can be distorted, your gender, colour,
