SOCI 2060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Peripheral Vision, Symbolic Interactionism, American Psychological Association
Document Summary
We learn to be social and communicate: people are conscious. It is the idea that you know you are in the world and you can reflect on your actions and the world around you. Idea here is that we are developing a new idea that motivates human behaviors. It is a patterned process of interaction: process of people interpreting one another and acting. This is a different view of society that you would encounter in other theoretical frames ie: marxism, there is a rigid hierarchy of groups based on where they sit in the means of production. For marx, many things in your life is based on your class. Whereas symbolic interactionists see society from the bottom up. This is an example of a joint action. We all come to the lecture at a certain time. Defining reality: according to the oed: process we need a method that will allow us to understand how people attach meanings to certain things.
