Selling or appropriation of church lands the church is no longer one of the main players in the economy. The church no longer controls the education system. Religious imagery and symbols are no longer a part of religious expression. Science replaces faith as the most influential way of understanding the world. We now have the possibility of choosing not to be religious or atheist. It becomes possible to live in society without believing in god. A split between the public and the private. Religion becomes a personal choice rather then a social requirement. Nothing is sacred in terms of being exempt from the market. Also shares that nature is a natural realm that needs to be. Also shares that nature is a natural realm that needs to be exploited. Berger argues that the roots in secularization go much deeper than protestantism, and are already found in judaism.
