=the declining influence of religion in all areas of social life. *decline in the influence of christianity in the west. Secularization= the process by which sectors of society and culture are removed from the domination of religious institutions and symbols. Manifestations of secularization: the selling/appropriation of church lands. French revolution, spain late 1920s= a direct appropriation of church land. The economy is now entirely secular: separation of church and state. The church no longer has a major role in the political realm: emancipation of education. The church no longer controls the education system: decline of religious contents in culture. Beginning with the renaissance, there is a shift from religious symmetry and symbols to things like scenes from everyday life, pictures of battles, etc. Beginning of a split between philosophy and theology. In literature, the shift from religious form/content, the invention of the modern novel (the novel aims to give expression to the wide range of new experiences in modernity)
