SOCI 3430 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Social Exclusion, Neoliberalism, Social Inequality
Document Summary
Every group in society is based on this idea. The idea that everyone should have equal access to opportunity (e. g. education) disregarding race, gender etc. When people are not given equal opportunity, the victim is blamed (e. g. saying certain people do not deserve good jobs because they are lazy) Marginalized groups do not have the power to oppress others; you would need access to institutions of power and racialized groups do not have this power to racialize others. In order to be a racist, one must have privilege and power. This is a form of racism because it blames the victim. Gender oppression still exists e. g. abused women in vulnerable situations, class is also important in social inequality situations. Intersections of class, gender, and race are all important in terms of people who are oppressed; one cannot be dealt with without the other. You can easily see difference; you cannot ignore it.
