Litle atenion given to origins of those who arrived before confederaion. Paper examines in detail the scoish origins of migrants who setled one upper canada county between 1784-1815. Scoish highlanders came to glengarry county are among best known setlers of upper canada. Both untrue facts: considerable gap exists between tradiional accounts of glengarry immigrants and knowledge needed to assess economic/social origins of these highland setlers. Gaelic social structures or the degree of control which clansmen coninued to exert over daily life. It is against this backdrop of an embatled, but resilient culture that highland emigraion to. Social organisaion in highlands was sill clearly tribal in origin, jusice was local and personal, and agriculture operated at a subsistence level.
