Document Summary

Cont from last week: impact of stereotypes. Pressure to conform to perform your gender based on stereotypes and dominant ideology. Stereotypes do have serious consequences on our everyday life. Pressure to conform" there are societal standards to meet. A set expectation of what a girl does vs what a boy does for example. Pressure that does come from other individuals e. g. : parents, friends, media, state. We come to accept the stereotypes set by those in the dominant society, that not only allow us and leads to conform with them but also allow the stereotypes to become true. By internalizing the stereotypes, it allows it to become true. Self-fulfilling prophecy- making stereotypes and dominant ideology come true". By believing it makes it become true. When we talk about self-fulfilling prophecy with gender the process of us believing it and the standards of society strengthens it(power of our belief) Fear of not measuring up to stereotypes and social expectations: stereotype threat.
