SOSC 1185 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sociobiology, Randy Thornhill, Biological Determinism
Document Summary
Here is a quote from leahey and harris"s text, human learning (1989, 2nd ed. p. 318: Although jealousy is clearly an emotion experienced by both men and women, the evidence is that it is a more powerful emotion in men. The enraged husband slaying his wife and her lover (and getting off) is well known; the reverse is not. This pattern the classic double-standard is found in almost all cultures. That males should be especially jealous makes good biological sense. Men can never be certain of paternity, and adultery by their wives (who they know in their hearts can find willing partners) reduces their fitness. So evolution has produced men who feel sexual jealousy and become outraged by their wives" affairs, even while they themselves aim to seduce their neighbor"s wife. Male sexual jealousy is perhaps the leading cause of familial assault and murder .
