Fall handout lecture 9 constructing dominant gender ideals con"t. Constructing dominant gender ideals con"t: hegemonic masculinity: the social, historical construction of a dominant masculinity. As with femininity, we are considering masculinity as socially and historically constructed. This approach allows us to examine how and why masculinity changes & stresses gender as power relations. Mackinnon (2003) discusses this variation of gender ideals over time and from culture to culture. He also refers to the gender system" that emphasizes a binary or opposition and the social rewards for being real" men or real" women based on social ideals. Hegemonic masculinity: the concept of a dominant idealized form of masculinity that is superior to other forms of masculinity and to femininity/women; came to be based on the standard of middle class, white, heterosexual with material wealth. It emphasizes competition and power over others in order to reach this ideal.
