Document Summary
What is sexual and what is not. Sexuality is something that is natural/biologically determined. Different times and places different views and boundaries on sex. Categories used to talk about sexuality change. 19th century western society, development of sex binary system, strong belief in the natural connection between gender and anatomy, elements (biological, culture, sexual orientation, identity) all linked together and determined each other. Stressed anatomy determine destiny in terms of gender and sexuality (females are feminine heterosexual) Rules and expectations differ between men and women: sexual double standard (different rules, expectations, and restrictions between men and women) Sexuality and intimate relationships are likely to be affected by systems of power and control that relate to race, class, sex, etc. Ideas and practices are culturally and historically influence, incorporated as part of a sex/gender binary system, normalizing and otherizing. Ideas around what is normal sexuality: what seems to be normal is always shifting.
