Take into account the element of material, which either already exists or has to be procured. What is the material in which the ideal of reason is wrought out: primary answer: personality itself. Reason attains positive existence in human knowledge. It is in human desire, accompanied by reason, to live in a state (polis) which will benefit everyone within it. The state will limit their freedom but it will secure a small space of liberty for each member of the state. Law"s morality, and government are required for this type of freedom to take place. The idea is the inner spring of action; the state is the actually realised moral life. The will of the individual is his morality. The individual living in the state has a moral life, possess a value that consists in this substantiality alone. Sophocles in his antigone, the laws of morality are not accidental but are the essentially rational.
