Men doing much less work in the house and women are doing more; uneven gender division in the house 1880; work women did in the home is needed and time consuming. *doctrine of separate spheres* women remain in the home (safe and protected and supported by the men); men are supposed to have a job and earning a living. Family ideals in the home were powerful and are still powerful for organizing social reforms.
