Genre initially was a way of dividing up your audience differentiating your for-profit product from your competitors. Early days of movies characterized by profit motivating factors. Way of trying to enlarge the share of the market. Old one goes back to greeks and aristotle (first began to talk about different way of telling stories by looking at conventions of stories) Film industry is adopting a series of conventions about storytelling from other art forms (literature) Audiences accept and internalize these qualities when you decide which movie you want to see at the theatre. The genius of the system was the creation of genres despite conventionality, able to produce good stories that attracted audiences. Virtually all films made in hollywood since the 50s have been a genre film. Often compare films to those of the same genre becomes a way of classifying and evaluating films. Multi-generic movies attempt to broaden the appeal of a specific film.
