Adam and eve: social contract is a liberal creation story, classical definition of the state: community that claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory (max weber) "constitutionalism: framework as to how we constitute ourselves as a political community, framework to how you pursue freedom, lifeworlds inform our understandings. If you come from a different lifeworld, liberalism wont make sense: earth- rooted versus instrumental views, you should only have property if you invest your labour into it. Individual- base unit: community- compilation of individuals. Classical liberalism: protection of property, liberty of contract, free market, limited government intervention, humans are: autonomous rational individuals, dedicated to maximizing own interests, fear of democratic legislation. Social liberalism: emerges because of the harsh conditions generated by liberalism, reality over abstraction, welcomes democratic legislation- to implement reforms. Legal liberalism: rule of law, formalism, neutrality- no one group benefits, abstraction- creation of legislation is based on abstraction.
