Document Summary

Week 8 - field research and observational studies. Empirical evidence - often qualitative analysis in nature which can be applied quantitatively. Complete observer -> observer as participant -> participant as observer -> complete participant. Continuum highlights multiple possible roles, no xed roles in research. A complete observer - researcher does not intervene at all. Observer as participants - observing, but participating unknowingly. Classical interview - researcher/interviewer with questions and the subject/interviewer with answers - one-way relationship - role as researcher is to retrieve that information. Interactionist interview - idea is that the interview process is more of an interaction - knowledge is mutually constituted, generates a more intense connection and report and more uid interview. Documentary research - qualitative - conducting research on written documents, not necessarily archival, but all types, secondary sources. Researchers enter eld without a preconceived theory in mind. Pythagories, key themes and concepts come out of this process.
