Document Summary

In this idea, some individuals have personality traits that predispose them to becoming addicted to both food and alcohol or other drugs: two assumptions are inherent in this perspective: Eating disorders can be characterized as an addictive behavioral pattern. It has been suggested that binge eating can be viewed as an addictive behavior pattern, with food being the substance of addiction. Thus, for a subgroup of eating disorder patients, the presence of a personality disorder characterized by affective instability, disinhibition, and impulsivity appears to be associated with increased rates of substance use. It should also be noted that the diagnostic criteria for borderline personality disorder include items that overlap with bulimic and substance use symptoms (e. g. , unstable self- image, binge eating, substance abuse). This finding suggests that bulimics do not typically incorporate alcohol in their food binges. Insecure attachment has been seen as a common trait (although differently resolved) in both eating disorder and drug disorder individuals.
