Scholarly grammar: semantics- meanings of words, phrases, sentences, syntax- word order in sentences, morphology- the forms of words, phonology-the sounds of the language, pragmatics- the influence of context, including audience, on language use, problems with traditional grammar. Not possible to accurately describe english grammar (even in 7 volumes) Ignores wide variety of english grammar used in spoken english (grammar is prescriptive) But from a usage point of view the double negative is inappropriate: structural grammar. Charles fries: the point of view in this discussion is descriptive, not normative or legislative. Grammar and learning writing: the research on learning grammar. The study of traditional school grammar has no effect ton raising the quality of student writing. Every other focus of instruction examined in this review is stronger. Taught in certain ways, grammar and mechanism instructions has a deleterious effect on student writing.
