Crim 2305 police in modern society week 4. Use of force: we already talked about this last week. Law if vague: he was fairly young when he was shot dead, there was more force then reasonably necessarily used. Police may use as much force as necessary to protect themselves or others or to prevent escape. Shoot to stop not to kill: ontario. Special investigations unit for anyone killed or injured in a case involving police. But who is supposed to investigate the police. Usually it is ex-police officers which is fairly biased especially if they know each other. Research on deadly force: data is not really available to the public. Incidents varies by: region, type of community, police department traditions. Race: minorities are more likely to experience deadly force. Mental illness: high proportion have psychiatric history. Implication: need for officer training in dealing with confrontation. 20 feet rule for an offender with a knife.
