Words of one syllable have one vowel and ending in a single consonant double the consonant before a suffix beginning with a vowel : Hit + ing = hitting but help , helped ( two consonants ) . Love , lover ( ending in a vowel ) . Qu here is considered as one consonant : quit , quitting . When the final consonant is w , x or y it does not double : Now + ed = nowed box + ing = boxing .
