1. Aging of family members
a. Many adults find themselves taking care of their parents and their children.
b. Evaluate family relationships to determine family members perception of responsibility and
loyalty in relation to caring for older-adult member
c. Asses environment resources (number of rooms in the house or stairwells) in relation to the
complexity of health care demands for older adults
d. Help identify the health needs of both groups and assist the multigenerational family in
determining the health and community resources available
2. Disability of Family Member
a. Some may be minor but others may call for assistae i ADL’s
b. Goal is to manage these conditions and educate family caregivers in ways to give
appropriate support
c. Also education about prevention of any other acute health conditions that may occur
d. Assess the knowledge base of both the patient and family (medical course of illness and
prognosis of patient)
e. Assess their coping mechanisms of patient and family; adherence to treatment and rehab
regiments; need for community and social services, along w/ appropriate referrals
f. Avoid isolation and encourage activities with others
3. Expanding family
a. Adoption
i. Nurses can provide the information, support, and reassurance needed to reduce
parental anxiety regarding the adoptive process.
ii. The earlier the infant enters their adoptive homes, the better the chances of parent-
infant attachment
iii. Siblings, adopted or biologic, who are old enough to understand should be included in
the decision making process
iv. Child should be informed at an age young enough so that they do not remember a
time when they did not know they were adopted.
1. The timing is highly individual but must be right for both the parent and
child.
2. They should feel as if they were active participants in the selection and not
just abandoned children
3. Parents should expect a change in behavior after the disclosure
b. Blended family
i. Also called a reconstituted family- includes at least one stepparent, stepsibling, or half
sibling.
ii. Often the older relative holds the authority and makes decision in consultation w/ the
young parents.
c. Birth (Preparing for parenthood)
i. Promote physical survival and health of child, foster skills and ability necessary to be
self-sustaining adults, and foster behavior capable for optimizing cultural values and
beliefs
ii. Typically learn by trial and error and committing the same mistakes that so many
other parents have done as well.
