ANTH-150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hmong Americans, Zip Code, Asthma
Class #8 Notes:
More than “Model Minorities” or “Delinquents”: A Look at Hmong American High
School Students
– Stacey J. Lee
1. Lee’s purpose:
●Lee is examining the factors that affect Hmong American students’
education. She compares 1.5 generation and 2nd generation Hmong
American students. Lee finds that although Hmong culture plays a role in
school achievement, the focus on culture itself fails to consider that impact
of structural forces (racism and lack of economic opportunities, etc.) on
students’ attitudes toward education.
2. Where did this research take place?
●Wisconsin High School
3. What does “1.5 generation” mean?
●Foreign born children who came to the U.S. very young and who are
largely educated and socialized in the U.S.
●May have dual frame of reference -- often have dual identities but have a
large U.S. frame since they were raised here.
●Can also act a bridge between their parents and the 2nd generation
immigrants
Documentary: Notes
Unnatural Causes - Is Inequality Making Us Sick? Episode Five, Place Matters
“Why are zip code and street address good predictions of health?”
“What is the “poverty tax” and what circumstances perpetuate it?”
- To buy a car, it costs $500 more than in a normal neighborhood
- People in poor neighborhoods do not have the right environment because
the community does not have the resources to deal with the environment
(environment is a determinant of health)
- Low income disinvested communities -- people do not want to invest on
that area because stores close and there is no reason why they should
invest to help the environment and make that community better so that
area gets worse
