Silent films (1880s-1920s-ish) - movies w/ no dialogue (but often have music and title cards, etc. ) Studio system - actors under contract to the studio, Vertical integration - control of production, distribution, and exhibition. Paramount decision - anti-monopoly laws (forced them to sell off their movie theaters) Director - most important part of the film (referred to as the author ), have distinctive styles and direction. Movie plots and direction can come in and out of season. Actors can also come in and out of season. Tropes/plot lines, etc. can be overlooked upon release but gain substance over time. Roger ebert famous because he"s critical and funny. Companies pay movie production to stick their logos into movies. Can be used to expose global audiences to products. Sometimes just used to add more money to the production. More common in the last 30 years. More common in the last 20 years.
