Chapter 1: food choices and human health: the human body and its food: The best food are the ones that provide energy and nutrients. When we eat plant based food, those plants get the energy directly from the sun. Therefore, we indirectly get energy from the sun. By taking supplements, you"re taking a supplemental form of those nutrients you need to get by not eating food. Real food is superior to supplements because you can"t live long in a supplemental diet. You have a lot of benefits from eating food (you get muscles, etc) There are phytochemicals in foods, but not in supplements: the abundance of foods to choose from. Whole foods = everything that is not processed. Adequacy = getting all the nutrients necessary. Balance = no other nutrient is overemphasized than the other or underemphasized. Calorie control = controlling your calories, making sure you eat the adequate amount.
