Document Summary

In the analogy of the cave, the men are raised to only look at the shadows cast on the wall, knowing nothing else outside of this. One man frees himself from the chains and is free to wander around the cave and sees what is beyond the shadows - he can now see the light and what was casting the shadows themselves. Then, it is a decision between whether to tell the other men in the cave and free them from their chains or to leave them to the unknown/ignorance. The philosopher sees the outdoors and then goes back down into the cave with the others. Once you see the truth, you can no longer get away with the people in the cave again which is a reference to socrates. Hannah arendt wrote in responses the ideals found in these texts. Evil isn"t something exceptional and that it is actually quite common.
