Nietzsche brings up in the preface that most people will not be able to understand what he is
saying and they wont be able to hear what he is saying in this book
His whole philosophy is an attempt to tear down Plato and his teachings
He was expected to go into the Church as all his family was Lutheran but he rejects God
and will later be labeled as the anti-Christ
He wants to unfold a perspective rather than use a system like Descartes would do
He wanted readers to read what he said chew on it and then go back to it and chew on it
some more than gain a deeper understanding of it
Genealogy of Morality the meaning of the name
Morality can be understood as a code of behavior (good versus bad) but the limited sense
of morality that Nietzsche wants to go beyond is not good and bad but it the narrow sense
of good and evil in the Judeo-Christian beliefs
Genealogy is a line of descent like a family tree and to do a genealogy of a concept is to
trace the origin of the actions and the terms used (first time the word "good" is used) and
the evolution of the meaning of the words or concepts
You have to look at the past, present, and future meanings of the terms
There is some sort of cultural practices in the past, dominate style of interactions, cultural
doesn’t grow of no where but rather is from power (the powerful gave themselves the right
to create these cultures), find its expression in language
In the present, a new meaning of that word or new words and there will be new cultural
practices then, etc
There is some kind of transformation story from the past to the present
There will be, in the future, some kind of future meaning that will then have a future
cultural practices
Nietzsche writes from the perspective of the present and is trying to figure out the cultural
practices and is trying to bring an end to this and bring a new light to what the future can bed
Nietzsche thinks that a genealogy might help him critique the present is not that he wants to give
up on the current system but that it he wants to show that it is not an innate thing and that it can
be changed because it is just something that was created by humanity
He sees possibility in this by retrieving something from the past to tell us about what is
happening right now
It is the powerful who are able to set what the morality really is because what they say goes
Noble morality starts with a yes to oneself, life, and the world rather than a no
If it didn’t work out for you like the poor, than you probably aren't going to jump at yes
There is no hatred in noble morality because it doesn't define itself with a confrentation
with any other and there is no distain towards the others (pathos of distance)
Resistance is crucial for the idea of slave morality
