Pathos of distance is the feeling of being distant from, the rulers were so far from the peasants
that they feel completely untouched by them
Nietzsche does not want to have a moral system so it is difficult for regular people to look at him
and understand what he was really about because he doesn’t want any type of moral code and we
all of those imbedded in ourselves from culture
Nietzsche uses what you eat and digest as a metaphor but he also finds it as relevant to being a
good philosopher and writes books about it later in life
No present without forgetfulness means that there has to be some ability to let the past go in
order to stay focused on what is going on right now in the moment
An idea of the un-conscience in On Genealogy has to do with processing things and
digesting things (look at what is the below the water's surface of an ice burg)
A passive notion of forgetting would be the memories just slipping through us, forgetting
would point to an inability
Nietzsche says that forgetfulness, though, is actual a great talent that we should appreciate
and see as a good thing
An artful facility of memory needs to counteract the facility of forgetfulness
Promising is the ability to vouch for oneself in the future
When we say we are going to do something we need to actually do it
How do we have a memory?
It must have been created and it must have a history of some kind, not born with the ability
to promise, we have to sculpt the body in to being about to do this
Morality of custom makes us into responsible people and it is learned from punishment
We don’t want to feel pain, we want to be responsible
Maybe we haven't completely let go of our taste for cruelty and we can still find it in day to day
life like our desire to see car accidents, fights in sports, crime tv shows

Document Summary

Pathos of distance is the feeling of being distant from, the rulers were so far from the peasants that they feel completely untouched by them. Nietzsche uses what you eat and digest as a metaphor but he also finds it as relevant to being a good philosopher and writes books about it later in life. Promising is the ability to vouch for oneself in the future: when we say we are going to do something we need to actually do it. It must have been created and it must have a history of some kind, not born with the ability to promise, we have to sculpt the body in to being about to do this. Morality of custom makes us into responsible people and it is learned from punishment: we don"t want to feel pain, we want to be responsible.
