Document Summary

Thick description: toward an interpretive theory of culture (clifford geertz) Conceptual morass: a big tangled mass of things. How symbols and meanings come together is culture. Thick description- deliberately winking to maybe somebody particular, with a message in mind, at specific times, discretely, and that is just the beginning. Webs of significance- tinking glass is communicated but could be confused is people tinked glass for no other reason. Culture derails; it works and doesn"t work; don"t stop digging culture is the only thing that works. Our own constructions of other people"s constructions of what they and their compatriots are up to. Social farce- not invested in trying to understand (miscommunication); trying to make a connection work that simply won"t. We want our webs of significance to be a slide down. Sheep raid can"t know what it is without knowing what it is to steal a sheep. If you don"t get symbols you miss most of everything.
