Deoxyribonucleic acid, or dna, is the hereditary molecule common to all living organisms. It is the instruction manual from which an organism is built. Dna exists in the nuclei of most cells. Each human cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes; one chromosome inherited from mother and one from father; the 23rd chromosome pair determines a person"s sex. Chromosome: dna molecules are organized into discrete structures called chromosomes. Dna is a long strand of nucleic acids: single dna molecule stretched out is about 2-5 inches long. Nucleosomes: the dna strand wrapped around the proteins. Histones: proteins that long dna molecules are wrapped around. Chromatin: dark granular region seen when nucleosomes are grouped together. Dna is made of two strands of nucleotides. Each of the two strands consists of a chain of molecules called nucleotides that are bonded together. The nucleotides come in four types: adenine (a), thymine (t), guanine (g), and cytosine (c).
