Document Summary

Different coat proteins define the donor compartment from which vesicles bud. Some vesicle membrane proteins ensure the fidelity of compartmental targeting during vesicle trafficking. Other vesicle membrane proteins catalyze the fusion of a vesicle and its target. Protein glycosylation patterns are altered in the golgi. Secretory vesicles undergo constitutive or regulated fusion with the plasma membrane during exocytosis. Regulated secretion enables high concentrations of proteins to be released in response to appropriate signals. Exocytosis is responsible for delivering proteins to the cell surface or to the outside of the cell (secretion). Endocytosis brings in materials from the outside of the cell, often to the lysosome for recycling.
