Fingerprints have been around and recognized for centuries. In regards to the cj system, fingerprinting began to be used in the early 1900s (ny, 1911). Toe-prints and palm-prints are just as good sources of evidence as fingerprints. The common term for fingerprinting in cj latent fingerprints (hidden fingerprints). Natural sources help leave fingerprints (oils and swear from your body, dust, etc. There are also things known as plastic fingerprints which can be visually seen: surfaces such as duct tape, wet paint, etc. leave visual fingerprints. Some states and countries have different numbers of points of reference from a fingerprint for identification: france (17) england (16) usa (12). Fingerprints at a crime scene are more helpful in building convictions than finding a suspect. The national fbi clearinghouse for dna samples is codis. The potential problem of dna is that it is not always absolutely clean that people assume due to cross-contamination from the crime scene.
