CSD-2464 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fundamental Frequency, Fourier Analysis
Document Summary
Lecture 3: phase describes how wave patterns relate to each other. In phase: waves crest and trough at same time. Out of phase: waves crest and trough at different times: addition of waves out of phase yields cancellation (destructive interference, addition of waves in phase yields higher amplitudes. Wave addition and complex sounds: complex sounds contain multiple frequencies, adding simple sounds with different frequencies produces complex sounds, adding periodic sounds may yield a complex periodic sound. H2 represents vibration along of the vibrating body; h3 is vibration along 1/3 etc. Waveform versus line spectrum: waveform: time on x-axis, amplitude on y-axis. Shows how the overall amplitude of a complex wave varies over time. Individual harmonics not directly represented: spectrum: frequency on x-axis, amplitude on y-axis. Shows a single time slice only: no time varying information. Is obtained by fourier analysis: analyzing complex waves into simple components.
