CJ 2120 Lecture 7: Patrolling - Oct. 5th 2016
Document Summary
Greatest # of cops are assigned to patrol. Supposed to deter crime through visibility, even though that doesn"t really work. Avg. about 4 calls every 12 hours. Adds that time on top of how many calls they think they"ll have for that day (how many hours they think calls will take in an avg. shift) Factors in general city population as well as expected traffic for that day, i. e. , holidays, football games, etc. Shifts for patrol officers vary greatly by jurisdiction. 5% of addresses account for 64% of police calls. 60% of addresses haven"t called for police officers in 5 years. 84% of patrolling is done by cars, 89% of those officers use single drivers. Most patrolling by single drivers (double drivers aren"t much safer than single officers) Can cause problems in areas with unpredictable weather. You can see everything in a crowd because you"re up higher and you can move around traffic.
