Early 1900s: the first sworn policewoman position created. Women served in the criminal justice system previously civilians to this dealing with the women and children. o. However, policeman and policewoman were two different positions. Policewomen were required to have a higher education, prior social work or o nursing, and they were paid less. The first big bumps in policewoman increase came with wwi and wwii because there was a huge increase in prostitution. A policewoman met all the requirements to take the sergeants exam except she was a female. She sued and won the case, and her and another women were allowed to take the exam, and the both did well. The positions of policeman and policewoman now became known as a police officer. Policewomen on patrol (1974): the police foundation did a study looking at washington, d. c"s police department hiring requirements which used the same measure of requirements regardless of one"s sex. board. o.
