CJ 2430 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Walnut Street Prison, Elizabeth Fry
Document Summary
First jail was the walnut street jail: turned into eastern and western penitentiaries. Started by william penn and benjamin rush: problems with penn system. Cells built in a stacked/ tier system. Inmates were together during the day so this was alright. Saved people from the embarrassment of being in prison. The smaller cells were more economical: allowed for more inmates in the jails. Used lock step method as well as prison stripes: this was the first time for a need to divide prisoners by crime, different stripes determined different security levels. Advocated for separation of men and women prisoners: totally separate prisons, managed by women. Provided feminine care and training: cooking, cleaning, good woman things. Reformist/ treatment in corrections: further divided the classification system. Marks were given to inmates for good behavior: allowed for parole and early release. Thought that the people who were let out were rehabilitated: theoretically this was true.
