The importance of physical evidence is connected to the rise and sophistication of science. Expert witnesses are allowed to give their opinion and interpretation of evidence. Frye vs. united states: established a general acceptance rule . Daubert vs. merrill dow pharmaceuticals inc. : replaced general acceptance rule with a four-fold guideline on the admissibility of scientific evidence. One of the oldest criminal justice agencies in anglo-american history is the coroner. Forensic pathology emerged later, and was more specialized/scientific than ancient coroners. In 1877, massachusetts abolished the coroner"s system and established the medical examiner. The nyc medical examiners office created toxicology, the study of poisons. Forensic pathology in america today: coroners continue to be elected officials, the medical examiner is generally appointed for life and is a trained medical doctor with further specialization in pathology. Pathology: the study of reasons why people get sick or injured. Dead: the cessation of life; when a person is lifeless; able to be revived.
