CSD-2361 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Phonetic Transcription, Speech-Language Pathology
Document Summary
Phonetics : study of the perception and production of speech sounds. : refers to the dichotomous decision making about speech behavior, deciding if a sound is right or wrong, correct or incorrect. Is the easiest of the three scoring systems in terms of complexity. Can be performed by more than the therapist, like a aide, parent or caregiver. :is the traditional system of scoring in speech pathology to tell a therapist what type of error the child is making. A sound can be scored as correct, or 4 incorrect categories. : the two other methods focus on scoring of behavior, while phonetic transcription focuses on description of behavior. The idea being to describe what the child is saying, not judge or rank it based on a standard. Narrow transcription adds phonetic detail to broad transcription, using diacritics. Phonetic transcription requires highest level of skill from clinician.
