What is the biosphere: the portion of the earth where organisms exist and interact with each other and their nonliving environment. Non-living systems important to the biosphere: atmosphere. Troposphere air 78% nitrogen, 21% o2. > 1% of all water and most freshwater is in the form of ice: lithosphere. Maintenance of the biosphere: one way flow of high quality energy from the sun through living systems and back into the environment as low quality heat.
