Document Summary

Anatomy: the study of the structure of body parts and their relationship to one another. Regional: all structures in one part of body. Systemic: gross anatomy of body studied by system. Surface: study of internal structures as they relate to overlying skin. Physiology: considers the operation of specific organ systems (what do certain organs do) What a structure can do depends on its shape, size, and location. Necessary life functions: maintaining boundaries: internal separate from external, responsiveness: ability to sense change and respond, metabolism: all chemical reactions that occur in the body. How organ systems are related: nutrients and oxygen distributed by blood, metabolic wastes eliminated by urinary and respiratory systems, skeletal and muscular systems. Homeostasis: body systems interact to maintain this, ability to maintain a stable internal environment, loss of homeostatic control causes illness or death. Anatomical position: body erect, feet slightly apart, palms facing forward, thumbs pointing away from body.
