Ivan the terrible (1533-1584: tried to eradicate the boyars (aristocrats) who opposed his rule, he established a new aristocracy, oprichniki, civil war broke out upon his death, the romanov family took over, serfs, slaves in russia. The modernizer (peter the great, 1682-1725: european tour 1697-1698, brings back ideas for government, machines and technology/military.
