Background: all of area around vietnam was owned by france; france indochina, japan moved in and took over the french colonies in ww2, ho chi minh lead a resistance against the japanese. Assisted by the us; ho chi minh thought the us would look kindly on. When ww2 ended, france wanted to re-establish its colonies around the world. The us needed france on its side. The us decided to let france re-establish vietnam as a colony. Ho chi minh turned and started to fight the french. Dienbienphu (1959) ho chi minh defeated the french and kicked them out of vietnam: the united nations divided vietnam into north vietnam and south vietnam. North communist and south democratic: when france leaves, the us started to aid sothern vietnam. North vietnam was fighting a nationalist fight; trying to establish a nation: they were in for the long haul. Committed to the concept of domino theory.
