HPE-2110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Myplate, Dietary Fiber, Trans Fat
Document Summary
Myplate is a component of a larger communications initiative based on the. 2010 dietary guidelines for americans to assist consumers in making better food choices. It was constructed as a reminder to americans to eat healthy and was not intended to solely change consumer behavior. Myplate depicts the five food groups by utilizing a well-known mealtime visual, a place setting. The five food groups include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. In may 1993, the federal government started requiring food manufacturers to provide accurate nutritional information about their products on their product labels. Because food labels are standardized, relatively straightforward and easy to read, much of the guesswork has been taken out of good nutrition. Ingredients are listed on food labels by percentage of total weight, in order from heaviest or highest to lowest. By reading the listing of ingredients, an individual can determine whether a food is relatively high in fat, sugar, salt, etc.
