24% of adults lead completely sedentary lives. Nearly 50% of american youth between the ages of 12 21 do not participate in regular vigorous activity. Twenty-eight percent of americans ages 18 or older have reported no physical activity in the last 30 days. Only 15% of american adults participate in regular physical activity for five or more days per week for 30 minutes or longer each activity session. Sedentary living and poor dietary choices are also related to high cholesterol, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. Fifty-one percent of american adults have serum cholesterol levels greater than 200 mg/dl, a level considered high and related to coronary artery disease. Twenty percent have levels greater than 240 mg/dl which is considered extremely high and dangerous to individual health. These dangerously high levels are not restricted to adults. Thirty-six percent of american youth aged 19 or under have serum cholesterol levels of 170 mg/dl or higher.
