HPE-2110 Lecture 21: Lecture 21
Document Summary
In addition to the fitt guidelines discussed above, there are five principles of training that dictate how the body adapts to physical activity and thus should be considered in a training program. Overload: performing at a level greater than what the body is accustomed to. Progression: increasing overload gradually over an extended period of time. Specificity: improving an area of fitness by performing activities targeting that area. Regularity: engaging in activity on a consistent basis. Individuality: selecting activities based on fitness level, interests and goals. If you want to get more fit and in better shape, then you have to do activities that challenge your body. Example: you will need to add weight to a lift to get stronger. If you want to get more fit, then you need to do increasingly challenging activities over a long period of time. Progression is the consistent application of overload.
