In an effort to control weight, some people engage in dangerous weight loss practices that result in eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder are dangerous and all-too-common eating disorders. Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by eating a large volume of food in a short amount of time (binging) and then attempting to prevent weight gain by ridding themselves of the food (purging). The terms physical activity and exercise are often used synonymously, though they do not indicate the same thing: physical activity is any bodily movement that increases energy expenditure above the resting level. It should be noted, however, that efforts to achieve weight loss through physical activity alone generally produce only a 2-3% decrease in bodyweight or bmi, therefore it is important to augment physical activity or exercise with a proper diet.
