HPE-2110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Semi-Vegetarianism, Dietary Fiber, Junk Food
Document Summary
Today, people eat meals outside of their homes more often than ever before. Due to their quick service and comparatively low prices, fast food chains are the most frequent source for meals prepared outside of the home. Each day, millions of people line up inside or drive through outside service lanes of one of the over 140,000 fast food establishments in this country. When meals are prepared with speed and convenience as the primary focus, good nutrition will, in most cases, suffer. A great majority of fast foods are high in fat, calories, and salt, and low in many of the essential nutrients and dietary fiber. However, fast food does not have to mean junk food. While it may take a little more thought and discretion, quick and healthy alternatives do exist. Depending on what ingredients are used and how the food is prepared, fast foods served in restaurants can be healthy.
