Plato was born sometime around 427 bce, and died sometime around 347 bce (80 years old). He was born to a wealthy, aristocratic family and was expected to take up political office: his uncles were very influential politicians. Peloponnesian war (431-404 bce): massive war between athens v. sparta: athens: the major political and military power at the time. They had a massive navy that controlled the aegean sea. o. Spartans: had a small navy at the time, but they had strong soldiers on land: athens was expected to win due to the size of their navy, but they lost. This also resulted in the end of the golden age of greek civilization and led to athens becoming the intellectual capital of greece: when the spartans took over athens, they instituted a puppet government . The 30 : 30 people from athenian assembly who vowed loyalty to sparta.
