Document Summary

The distinction between beta and phi movement led to the founding of gestalt psych. Beta motion the movement of the dots. Phi motion it looks like there is something moving in front of the dots (cid:522)gestalt(cid:523) means (cid:522)whole(cid:523) The whole is different from the sum of its parts. Comes from the beta vs. phi distinction. In both systems we are using the same parts, but the visual experience is different for beta than it is for phi. Gestalt psychologists: wolfgang kohler, kurt koffka, and max wertheimer. We tend to see the gestalt that is most simple and symmetrical organization. Proximity parts that are close together are grouped together. Similarity parts that are similar to each other are grouped together. Good continuation parts that form a more logical pattern of change are grouped together. Closure we tend to see a gestalt as whole even if a part is being made incomplete by another overlapping gestalt.
