PSY-3215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Electromagnetic Spectrum, Visual Angle, Illuminance
Document Summary
Electrons pop out to higher energy levels and then come back down, which releases a packet of energy called photons. Our eyes can only see the visible spectrum of light (a tiny portion on the electromagnetic spectrum) Measured in nanometers (one billionth of a meter) Runs from about 400 nm to 700 nm. Red is on the 700 nm end, yellow is around 600 nm, green is around 500 nm, and dark blue is around the 400 nm end (spectrum colors) First thing to take into account is the light source. Radiance: the property of light (energy) that is being emitted. Illuminance: what hits the object (the physical description of what energy is hitting the object) Some light rays will be absorbed and some will bounce off. Luminance: the light rays that bounce off the object. Retinal illuminance: light rays that are entering your eye and striking the back of the eye (retina)
