PSY-3215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Saccade
Document Summary
Presented with a series of discrete pictures objects in the picture are going to change location in the picture. Unconscious inference: the visual system is not just recording, it is taking the bits of information and coming up with the most reasonable explanation for changes in the scene. Beta motion: when we look at a circle of dots where one disappears and then appears in a different location, we interpret this as the object being in motion. Contradicts unconscious inference we should still see the dots moving in a circle really fast. Shown the picture, taken away, and a new picture is shown where the spoke has moved location (vertical spoke has moved slightly clockwise) Explanations - the vertical spoke has moved clockwise or the horizontal line has moved counterclockwise. The most reasonable guess is that the vertical spoke has moved clockwise unconscious influence.
